Chris Schuelke, Executive Director of the Otter Tail County Historical Society, tells the story of the Maine Roller Mills - a.k.a. Phelps Mill, an exceptionally well-preserved and restored flour mill. Built in 1889, with a 1905 addition to process buckwheat, the mill served local farmers into the 1930's. Today the property is a beautiful county park, and the site of one of the largest art fairs in rural Minnesota, held each summer. The building still houses the original equipment and looks almost exactly as it did in when in operation at the end of the nineteenth century. Open to the public, interpretive displays explain how the mill was operated. This video is dedicated to the memory of Rich Osman, who worked for many years as a volunteer to help restore the mill and develop the interpretive displays.
My Great Grandfather and my Grandfather brought wagonloads of wheat to this mill from their farm in Carlisle Township - the same farm where I grew up.
