Hong Kongs health department has taken ten measures to prevent the emergence of swine flu on the island. New regulations say that doctors who suspect patients to be infected are now legally required to report cases to the Department of Health. All entry points into Hong Kong have stepped up quarantine measures, and Hong Kong residents have been advised not to travel to countries where cases of the flu have been confirmed.
Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene panel chairman Fred Li Wah-ming, says that Hong Kong must take measures to control how pig farmers dispose of swine.
[Hon. Fred Li Wah-ming, Hong Kong Legislative Council]:
At times, [pig farmers] may deliberately lose a refuse container, which is really quite dangerous because the pig may have died due to the swine flu virus. Just because they don't want to be troubled with the possibility of an infected animal, they may kill the pig and conceal the situation by discarding its remains.
Councilman Li says the number of pig farms in mainland China far exceeds that of Mexico, where the virus was first discovered in March. Hes concerned about another cover-up of the spread of the virus by Chinese communist authorities.
[Hon. Fred Li Wah-ming, Hong Kong Legislative Council]:
Mainland authorities say that the disease does not exist there, however I think that the World Health Organization should investigate and find out if there really is anything out of the ordinary happening. It's still very uncertain. Of course, the worst-case scenario is if it is found that officials are going to great lengths to cover up the reality. That would really be disastrous. Another possibility, however, is that nobody realizes the presence of the virus. If an infected person is cremated then there's no way of investigating further.
One person in Hong Kong is suspected to be infected with the virus and is undergoing medical testing. Two others previously suspected to be infected have now been cleared. Any person suspected to be infected will be examined in an isolated environment. The first 20 people confirmed to be infected will be sent to the infectious diseases section of the Princess Margaret Hospital.
