Transcript: "The Virginia Opossum also known as the North American Opossum is the only marsupial in North America. Marsupials have pouches for carrying their young through early infancy.

Baby opossums live in these pouches for 2-3 months and then ride on their mothers backs for an additional month or two. This is a huge portion of their life, considering that opossums have an average life span of only two years in the wild.

Opossums are slow, solitary, nocturnal animals and prefer to be left alone. When threatened they will hiss and bear their teeth, but under extreme circumstances they will play dead. Playing Possum serves two purposes it discourages predators that only eat live prey and it convinces some larger animals that they are not a threat to their young.

Virginia Opossums are the largest Opossums in the world. They are 15-20 inches long and weigh 9 to 13 lbs about the size of a domestic cat.

They have clawless thumbs on their hind feet and hairless prehensile tails that can grab objects and help them to balance when they are climbing."

  • Possums are North America's ONLY Marsupial, like a kangaroo. They carry their young in a pouch until old enough to fend for themselves. They eat Spiders, bugs & RATS, along with other creepie crawlies. As Mammals, their body temperature is too LOW to get Rabies & they are FRIENDS to home owners who don't have to use pesticides with them around. People are IDIOTS who don't realize that Possums are Beneficial Animals for homeowners.

  • Opossums deserve more respect than they currently get, especially here in the southern US.

Besides the fact that they are the only native marsupial to North America, they are rather beneficial to farmers and homeowners in that they will eat the insects, rodents and venomous snakes that CAN pose a threat to us and our homes.

If you find one rummaging through your garbage, remember that it was probably a stray cat or coon that knocked it over to begin with. Keep your trash lids secure!

  • Opossums are originary from Brazil. When Panama came out of the waters, Brazilian opossums started to pass through the new "bridge" and reached US. Another branch went to Australia, crossing Antartic, then covered of forests instead of ice. From the Brazilian opossums descend all the Australian marsupials. My garden is full of opossums and I always let fruit and cat food for them.

  • @AgileHProductions Yeah, I agree with you. I was in my backyard and saw one climbing up a tree. Although it showed its teeth and hissed, I can understand its reason for doing so. Like you said, they aren't harmful.

  • @legendmove It was a BB rifle, using metal BB's. To the potency I put my rifle on it can almost match a .22 cal rifle. Also, I know it was an Possum because I got cameras in my backyard, and he literally put a show in front of one of them. The rifle is an Powerline 880, and I used the scope that comes with it. I used a flashlight and aimed, and fired. Not sure what happened to the Possum after that night, but the next morning I checked the fence and it little drips of blood.

  • @BrBoomr What sight and caliber did u use to hunt them at night? I am afraid I can't tell the difference between an opossum and a rat at night......
