http://www.arthritistreatmentcenter.com Weight Loss Helps Knee Osteoarthritis, But Obesity-Related Damage May Remain.

Jeannine Stein writing in the Los Angeles Times reported that, according to findings from studies presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, weight loss may help knee osteoarthritis, but some damage from obesity may linger. In the first study, researchers interviewed 19 obese patients who were scheduled for bariatric surgery. At six- and 12-month interviews, the patients reported improvement in knee pain, stiffness and function." In a second study, the researchers "looked at the effect of weight loss on 10 morbidly obese people with knee osteoarthritis and pain" who had lost an average of "51 pounds a year after gastric bypass surgery." Although there was some pain and physical function score improvement, scores on symptoms, function and activity did not improve."
