Our 2011-2012 First Lego League (FLL) Food Factor rap to send a public message to encourage shoppers to separate their meat in grocery carts with a box and a bag to prevent cross-contamination to other items in the cart. In our FLL research, we learned that 50% of shopping carts in the grocery store are contaminated with E. coli and over 72% are contaminated with fecal matter. And we were surprised that 97% of shoppers never wash their reusable grocery bags, leading to 12% of the reusable bags contaminated with E. coli and 50% contaminated with coliforms. Coliforms are related to fecal matter from warm-blooded animals. Raw meat juices need to be contained to reduce cross-contamination. So, remember to wash your reusable bags. Box or bag your raw meats in the grocery cart to separate and reduce cross-contamination.
