@DeepBlueCR You may be a Spanish speaker, but that doesn't guarantee that you know the original vernacular names of animals . The Mobula mobular is the original animal called "manta" or "manta diablo" in Spanish in Spain, since hundreds of years ago. Do this search in google if you care: mobula mobular site:*.es. Even the scientific literature call them manta in Spanish. First link is a survey in Spain which shows that most people call them manta.

@mroldnewbie In spanish they are called 'raya diabolo' and the only the giant manta is the 'manta raya'.
@Carlos: this is mating behaviour and happens in January/February only here in Costa Rica.

@mroldnewbie these rays are called 'diabolos' in spanish and only the giant manta is called 'manta raya'
Tourists are often confused with the names and call every ray a manta.

Mobula is the genus name. Manta is the Spanish name for ALL of those rays. The Manta birostris was also called Devil ray originally.
The animal which originally was called "manta" was the Mediterranean Mobula mobular, the giant devil ray.
There is a difference between them, and they're not in the same genus, but they're all part of mobulidae, the manta subfamily.
So, they're not the big giant manta, but it's not completely wrong to call them mantas, as a generic term for mobulids.

FYI: They do it to slap parasites off their backs
