The Indian state of Orissa is experiencing an unexpected cold breeze and low temperatures across several regions in the state.
The drop in temperature to around 45 degrees Fahrenheit set a new 50 year record.
[S.C. Sahu, Director, Regional Meteorological Center]:
Now we have observed for the last 7-8 days that the wind pattern is northerly or north-easterly. So it causes the flow of wind from northeast part of India or from the Himalayan region side towards this region. So it causes drop in temperature. Another reason is that these days we are having a cloud-filled (overcast) sky so that the night time cooling is there, it is also adding some drop in temperature also.
The chilly weather has compelled most of the locals to stay indoors or go to bed after the sun sets.
[Basanti, Local]:
It's very cold now, really cooler than before. It is a big problem for the poor people here who do not have shelter. Somehow, we are still managing and coping with the chilly breeze.
The worst hit are the western part of the state and interior regions such as Kandhamal, experiencing the fiercest chill.
According to the meteorological observatory, the chilly weather will continue for a few more days in the region.
