The challenge was to calculate the area of the school soccer field by using 2 kinds of non-standard units. This activity was done so that the students could compare the school soccer field to the size of an average Javanese rice farm. We have learned that a rice farm in Java is about 0.3 of a hectare according to Detik.com The Grade 5 students needed to visualize this area by comparing it to a place that they see everyday. We decided to use non-standard units so that the students could better grasp the concept of measurement.
