Vol. Peter James ("Jake") McGerrigan and Command Quartermaster Tony Hughes of the Armagh Command, Official Irish Republican Army, were both killed by the British Army in Armagh City early in April 1973 while on active service. Jake and his comrade John Nixon were shot down by concealed British snipers on Windmill hill on 7 April 1973. Jake was killed, but John Nixon survived, becoming a founding member of the Irish Republican Socialist Party. Later while in The Maze prison John became a Blanketman and participated in the first Maze Hunger Strike .
Thankfully, he survives and today runs an small art gallery in Armagh city, where he is still involved in Socialist Politics. On 9 April 1973 Tony Hughes was preparing to carry out a retaliatory attack on the British Army when he too fell victim to a concealed British Army sniper. Both these young men fell in action against the foreign invaders of thier homeland. Let no words but praise be spoken in thier memories. Rest in peace, soldiers of the People!
