A song about the history of Nursing. Makes you feel proud (yet again) to be a Nurse. Written by a Nursing student in his last semester of BSN school
Shining the Light
© Avery Bryan-Dye 2007
A peninsula in the Black Sea
In the middle of the 19th century
The Crimean War was fought for 3 years
Nightingale put in her time
Nursing soldiers from the line
She gave 'em all her blood, sweat and tears
Back in England, home again
She thought it would be best to train
St. Thomas Hospital Nurses through a school
Around this time, additionally,
She wrote the first philosophy,
Maintaining and restoring health the rule
Chorus:
All through the years we've grown
And sought to make nursing our own
We've come so very far
And we're still raising the bar
Ensuring our holistic light is shone
Shortly after in the States United
North and South were most divided
Both used army nurses, women and men
Dorthea Dix, Mary Ann Ball
Far too many to list 'em all
So many that volunteered, even Walt Whitman
Twenty years later Red Cross was startin'
Founded by Clara Barton
As you know it still exists today
The NAAUSC
Started up in 1890
1911 became the ANA
(Chorus)
Lilian Wald in '93
Again that's the 19th century
Started public health on Henry Street
Sigma Theta Tau in '22
Was formed by students like me and you
"Love," "courage" and "honor" can't be beat
Through the summer in '23
All across eastern Kentucky
Breckenridge rode miles 700
For underserved she checked their need
Got ideas to sow the seed
For Frontier Nursing, personally funded
(Chorus)
Though it was 54 years
The Army Nurse Corps finally got bold
And said, "hey, men, come in" in '55
In '65 the ANA's position
Finally gave nursing a definition
Really making this practice come alive
Twenty years later, the nurses load
Was assisted by an ethics code
Still today they continue to revise
Do you know where you will be
Within the coming century?
I wish that I could see it through your eyes
(Chorus)
