I've owned my Canon 40D and the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 for six months now. It is still the primary lens I use and it has never let me down yet. It has taken a pretty good hit against a wall and the wall actually took more damage than the lens. I recommend going the extra financial mile to pick up this lens.

  • I NEED SOME ADVICE:

    1) my favourite photos are landscape and portraits, I have this lense ( 17-55mm 2.8) do you think i also should also get the 50mm 1.8?

    2) is the 10-22mm a good wideangle lense, im currently looking for a wide angle lense and was thinking to get that one.

    3) for wild life park shooting, what would you recommend for a telephoto lense? I need one so Im looking for adivce, I almost got the 17-200mm f/4 but maybe the focal length might not be enough. what do you recommend?

  • @jonnyfied

1.) I use my 50mm every portrait session, but not for landscapes.

2.) I'd look into getting a prime wide angle lens. Less distortion than the zoom.

3.) I would get the Sigma 70-200 and get a 2x tele converter for the same price at the cannon f/4. However, for that option to be cheaper you would give loose the IS.

  • I have this lens, and wondering if i should get the 24-70mm too?

  • @siliconsurf not until you go full frame, I wouldn't. The IQ is a little bit better, but I'd put the money toward the tele zoom you want.

  • great reviews. i appreciate them, because it's not a review by a company that may be biased to the product - but by another photog like myself!

i JUST bought the 17-55mm lens a few days ago. i was initially going to get the 24-70, but they were back ordered 6 months, which is serendipitious because after reading a lot of reviews, the 17-55 is just as good (except for the body build/quality) and on my new 50D, the 17mm is much more needed - as i shoot weddings and photo journalistic style.

  • i am sure many people including myself would love to see a review as helpful as this one on the sigma 70-200. thanks in advance

  • @jonnyfied I've read some decent reviews about the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 if you are still looking for a wide angle lens. The advantage the Tokina has over the 10-22mm is the constant aperture of 2.8 across all focal lengths. Just thought I'd through that out there. I'm dreaming of picking one up myself.

  • Good follow up! thanks!

  • I've made up my mind.....I going to buy some Pringles!

  • You said "Um" 48 times....ummmm

  • Very nice vid! May I know the exact model of that lens hood? Thinking of picking up this lens and that lens hood would be a great addition! :)

    TIA.

  • Very nice photos Nathan, the color rendition is great!

  • Just bought this lens for my 550d last week based off all the good reviews. Hopefully i made a good choice.

  • Have you had any problems with dust under the front element? I've heard a lot about that with this lens; also some IS problems after 8-14 months?

  • Have you had any problem with dust getting under the front element? I've heard a lot of that happening with this lens.
