Here's the intro from the english release of the good-quality Babar cartoon series which began airing in 1989.

For those who care, this was extracted from the episode "The City Of Elephants" which, according to my information, originally aired October 7th, 1989.

@squaretrapezoid Perhaps the fact that it's based on a 1930s book series from France? (Keep in mind that, according to one of my business-related textbooks printed in 2009, it's still pretty common for French employers to include euphemisms for "ethnics need not apply" in their job ads)

@Nearphotison It's a faithful adaptation of a series of childrens' books from 1930s France. I'd be more surprised if it WASN'T full of outdated social ideals.

The phrase "they don't make 'em like this anymore!" get's tossed around a lot, and it's usually not even true. But to say that phrase regarding cartoons such as Babar is in fact completely correct. Nearly all cartoons these days are either A) comedies with a lot of pop-culture references and other jokes that children wont understand B) violent action cartoons or C) EXTREMLY simple, repetative cartoons for children age 5 and below. Cartoons that are both inocent AND well-written hardly exist now

It's bad when you come here to enjoy your favorite childhood cartoons, and the extremely relaxing opening theme (haha) and you end up reading things about race and politics. Never fails....you people, NEVER cease to amaze me.
