"Untie Me" was the first chart single for this soulful group led by Joe Pope in 1962. From that point on, the Tams became one of the most popular beach music groups around frequently playing concerts throughout the Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia, and "Forever Tams" was quite the sentiment of the "shag" crowd.

  • I just heard the expression "beach music" for the first time while reading a novel and had to learn what it meant. At first I thought it was a term used for "surf music" but I had never heard it called that. Apparently it's mostly just rhythm and blues - my kind of music! This is a great tune and very reminiscent of The Drifters sound. Of course "Stay" by Maurice Willams and the Zodiacs is one of my all time favorite r and r tunes. Now I know what "Beach Music" is! Thanks for posting.

  • @fairlyfastfreddie1 "Beach Music" is a term coined by those shag dance enthusiasts primarily in the Carolinas to refer to the music they danced to, listened to, or otherwise enjoyed on the various jukeboxes in the bars and bistros along the Carolina coastline. For the most part it is rhythm and blues, but it does not embrace the entire genre nor is it solely confined to music of that genre.

  • Grew up going to see the Tams in N.C. S.C. and also Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs were big then. Music that stands the test of time

  • When I first married my wife, I used to listen to this record over and over and over again. She didn't understand that you have to accept a man for who he is. She untied me and we have been together for over 40 years and never looked back. Thanks for the memories and that record.

  • One of Joe south's own....Tams harmony is fantastic....roque

  • Tams,Jams!

  • @arizonaghost1 Agree it is a great song and Joe South version is very nice also. But the Tams version makes it one of the very best songs from the 60's Carolina beach scene. Steve

  • A great song written by Joe South in 1962
