Yes and No.
What they did is typical for TNG.
Instead of telling the audience how bad they often treat homosexuals, they create a situation where the "straight" love between genders, between man and woman is forbidden. By doing so they turn the perspectives around and bring the "normal" audience into the situation of "gays".
By recognizing how stupid the forbiddance is in this situation the "normal" audience also has to recognize how stupid the forbiddance or vilification of homosexuality is.

Lady GaGa - Burn This Way. I think she got some lyrics from this

@BorgHub because the pronoun "it" was already coined by some clown..

This episode fails to acknowledge Earth's own sexual orientation/gender identity based prejudice and discrimination. The space alien that Riker falls for was suppose to be played by a male actor, instead all of the aliens look like stereotypical 'male hating' lesbians. The (original) script made it clear that the issue was oppression based on sexual orientation and that sort of injustice was against what Starfleet believed.

LOL, the judge is the woman who thought Elaine's name was Suzie on Seinfeld.

"u must think we are a cruel, repressive people but nothing could be further from the truth"........followed with a description of how they dominate their culture, rule over their peoples sexuality, and dictate who they must be.....but oh no, totally not repressive or cruel.....

I love this episode. This reminds me of what gays and lesbians have been trying to tell us for years.

Being a Woman of Transition, this episode touched me deeply. To have the issue of transgender flipped in another world, where all are neither and to choose is forbidden.................
People condemn Star trek without even bothering to watch scenes such as this. It really angers me and this issue is now more out in the open in the news then it was when this first aired other episodes dealing with terrorism, religious fanatics, and government witch hunts are also more relevant. examples TNG: The High Ground, The Drumhead, DS9: In the Hands of the Prophets, ENT: Chosen Realm are all episodes people should watch and there lessons taken to heart.

Exactly! Star Trek touches on many issues related to humanity. Different alien species magnify our personality traits and who we are. To me, it's almost philosophical and can be very deep. Sadly many people fail to "get" that part of ST, trivializing the awesomeness of this series. What do others think? Thanks for your unique input! :-)

in the begining why does Riker call Soren a 'she' infront of the judge if he tries to convince them that Soren is 'normal' without gender

I guess it beats calling the being "it." Or? Hrrm. Good question and it's impressive you "assimilated" that detail. I will now assimilate the data. :-)

Yup, this is what happens when people in charge limit freedom of speech, sexual orientation, etc. People LOSE.
