Big Country on the old grey whistle test playing one of their classics, Just a shadow.

It went so well for you
With a place right where you wanted and the ones to fill it to
But some blows break the spell
That it hits you every day until you need to hit as well

It's just a shadow of the man you should be
Like a garden in the forest that the world will never see
You have no thought of answers only questions to be filled
And it feels like hell

It all seemed fine for you
Till the struggle of ambition turned in violence upon you
Sometimes a landslide comes
If you're hiding in that avalanche you need a place to run

It's just a shadow of the woman you should be
Like a garden in the forest that the world will never see
And you have no thought of answers only questions to be filled
And it feels like hell

I know there is no need for what's been done
I know there is enough for everyone
Frustration brings a heavy hand to bear
And there's never been a hand

Did we ever have it good
While we lived in Eldorado did we find the gold we should
If it really was the truth
Why are faces filled with anger that should only shine with youth

It's just a shadow of the people we should be
Like a garden in the forest that the world will never see
You have no thought of answers only questions to be filled
And it feels like hell

I know there is no need for what's been done
I know there is enough for everyone
Frustration brings a heavy hand to bear
And there never is a hand outside that cares
Still the promise comes of living fit for all
If we only get our back against the wall
I look at backs that pushed the wall for years
Scarred by many knives and too much fear

  • I was 17 when I bought Steeltown. This song caused me to weep at that age and I knew nothing about life then. It was so sad and terrifying. A life unfulfilled due to circumstance. There is no miracle in ruin. I believe this is one of the most remarkable songs even written.

  • Manchester Academy,Stu looked me right in the eyes and shouted stay alive.

Believe it or not that gesture helped me do just that.Sometimes fate can be so cruel.

Watching the boys playing the anniverssary gig in Blackpool brought it all back and i have nothing but admiration for tony, bruce and mark, but without stu its heartbreasking.

  • It's 10 years in December since Stu's death. The music lives on and brings back great memories of the 80s. Never forgotten x

  • @mongo88now This is the best comment I have ever read about b.c .Exactly my feelings put into words. Thanks

  • did he mention scotland enough at the intro!

  • @tomeeeee1 ...I believe that there is nothing glamorous about war. It is a "necessary evil" but it is evil and counter to the true nature of man...which is to teach, worship and leave progeny to take care of our planet for the future generations. I love your race as well...as i love ALL races. I just wish there were fewer RACISTS and more RACES.

    One Love...

  • Top, top band. Saw them six times and wished it was more. Steeltown is an epic album with moments of beauty and tenderness yet filled with anger and regret about Thatcher (Steeltown) and Reagan's (Flame of the West) divisive visions of society, both in the UK and the world at large. An album celebrating real peoples' real lives, and protesting against politicians' false and destuctive dogma.

  • Top drawer we all need to remember the other guys in the band they keep Stuarts spirit alive.
