Save Our Lady of Vilnius Committee
February 2, 2009
Dear Friend of Our Lady of Vilnius:
Our beloved church urgently needs your financial support if it is to remain standing. There is hope.
St. Brigid's Church in the East Village followed a similar path since 2004, even surviving one hour of blows from a wrecking ball. Their steadfast committee preserved the church through civil actions until, this past year, an anonymous donor gave generously and convinced the archdiocese to re-open the parish. By following their example of faith and action we hope to restore Our Lady of Vilnius as well.
When we wrote to you in August 2008, we had a Temporary Restraining Order that prevented the Archdiocese of New York from demolishing the church building. Our situation has changed dramatically since then:
· On November 18, 2008, the court dismissed this order. Shortly thereafter, the Archdiocese's demolition company sent notices to the church's neighbors that the church building would soon come down.
· On January 5, 2009, we filed an motion with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York to ask that this higher court reinstate the Temporary Restraining Order and review our case. The Appellate Division has granted this motion.
· By February 23, 2009, we must file additional legal arguments and documents with the Appellate Division, in order for this case to proceed. If we do not, our case will be dismissed and the Archdiocese will almost certainly resume its efforts to tear down the church.
We need to raise $10,000 for lawyer's and court fees by February 23, in order to continue with the case. Otherwise, we will lose the building.
If you want Our Lady of Vilnius to be restored as a place of worship and as a cultural and community center, please send a contribution. Checks should be made out to the "Lithuanian-American Community." Please write "Our Lady of Vilnius" on the memo line, so that the LAC knows that the contribution should be used for our benefit.
Contributions are tax-deductible. Please send them to: Elaine Derso, P. O. Box 230253, New York, New York 10023. Visit Save Our Lady of Vilnius to read more and contribute electronically using PayPal.
Any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely yours,
Christina Nakraseive
Recording Secretary

Yes, these people are good souls that love their Church. Deb, I will never get over the parishioners of St. Ann's, 120 East 12th Street on their knees, praying, singing hymns and crying on the street. I watched from my window...I was talking to a police officer about it and he remembered because he was assigned to be there. Very sad and it happened all through out New York.
