This demonstrates the dependence of geospatial analysis on BOTH geographic information systems software AND statistics. This demonstration combines the functionality of Maptitude from Caliper Corp and the open source R-Statistics.

Starting with tabular data, the data is geocoded. Now a data layer, new data layers can be formed. In this demonstration a point data layer that has been geocoded is used to create polygons of geographic proximity. These polygons are overlaid with other data layers, in this instance a point layer and a polygon layer. The geographic proximity layer can now truly be considered a "new" data layer. Attributes of the new data layer are exported to a flat data file (CSV). R-Statistics then reads the flat data file and statistical operations are performed

  • In the video "Integrating GIS and R-Statistics" I am using Caliper's Maptitude GIS software (caliper .com ). I also use ESRI's ArcMap Business Analyst (esri .com). During my time as software and data review editor of the monthly publication GeoSpatial Solutions I also used MapInfo; now, however, I do not have a current copy on my Alienware 15x laptop computer. My experience is positive with all these software packages. Which is "best" depends on needs, budget, and work environment.

  • Awesome! Thanks!

  • Thanks for the video. That was very cool.

  • Thank you for that Good GIS Video

  • @GrantThrall Thanks! Good to know. I am primarily a ESRI and ERDAS user but I am currently interested in branching out from these platforms, mainly due to budgetary contraints and an interest in open source solutions.

  • Thanks for that. What GIS software are you using?
