Rob Mackenzie plays "Tequila" as a tribute to composer and saxophonist Chuck Rio (aka Danny Flores).
With the entire lyric comprising 1 word joyously exclaimed 3 times, Tequila was first recorded in 1958 by "The Champs" as the B-side for their A-side single "Train to Nowhere". The record had little success until a Cleveland DJ played the B-side, whereby "Tequila" rocketed to #1, won a Grammy, and changed the way saxophonists played trying to emulate the raunchy, edgy sound.
Recorded on a cassette tape recorder at home.

banjo? obviously a guitar. I guess it needs to have tons of distortion to sound like a guitar right?

The beginning it shows an Epiphone Emperor Regent archtop with floating pickup. Going by that I'd say guitar not banjo.
