That was Phil using the famous "gated reverb" technique. Think "In The Air Tonight", "Mama", "Thru These Walls", "I Know There's Something Going On"...just to name a few and all Phil doing his thing.

You're right, the melody is the same, with a one word phrasing difference. Constituting a rip-off? I still disagree, as the subject matter is by far different, and there are only so many melodies that can occur within 5-7 notes. To say it is ripping off Live to Tell is not just stretching, it's outright incorrect. The phrase and melody may have been inspired by Live to Tell, but 5-7 notes of similarity does not make Dreaming a rip-off. But of course, you will now attempt to prove me wrong.

Oh you forgot that it's the exact same melody on that phrase, just phil is a semitone higher. The lyrics are of course not the same: burn is placed with live. So yes by my judgment if you use the same tune and words as another song it's called ripping-off.

people move on, grow out of phases and have to keep things fresh to stop becoming bored. They're also in business and have to satisfy a changing market. Most prog' bands came to realise that they would get much further with a more direct and accessible approach.

PHIL COLLINS and his ability to craft music into stories of real life was and is just brilliant. He's nearly 60 years old now and retired. His career spans more than 3 decades of music the planet will NEVER forget. Thank you Mr. Collins. I love you and what you gave to my own personal world. At last count, I know more than 140 songs of yours and like them. I do dislike that stupid song Illegal alien tune. It has no flow to it. But the rest of your music is pure GENUIS and this song too !
