A true story, the drama is set amongst the most well to do families of the 18th century England and in particular the five Lennox sisters (who just happen to be the great great grand-daughters of Charles II) who blaze a trail across the era in a search for both love and happiness.

  • "You have met him in secret"

..erm, what about you and your husband, dear :)

  • its interesting that louise who was launched by emiley turned out fine, but sarah who was launched by caroline turned out equally bad, if not worse! looks like the father was wise in his will after all.

  • How hypocritical is Caroline? She did something very similar to Sarah!

  • PSHH Sarah should have ran to Emily for counsel, both her sisters Caroline and Louisa are just arggg not helpful at all.

  • In this world one may consider oneself blessed to have even one parent or perhaps one friend who truly cares....

  • Basically, her initial situation and the way she was cornered by her sisters and society back then is sympathetic, but the way she chose her methods of escape and how she handled it really wasn't. Gambling and cheating to escape a loveless marriage in nobility is just stupid and naive. I think her husband would have listened to her if she just knew how to word what she was trying to say properly, and in the right tone.

  • part 2 - Her husband's personality is pretty blank - he buries himself in his work and clearly doesn't understand the meaning of marriage, and Sarah either genuinely doesn't have the spine to speak up with careful language and an even tone, or she just doesn't know how without risking her husband accusing her of anything that looks poorly on him. She's desperate, her sisters don't understand, so what does she do? Become incredibly, incredibly stupid and dig herself into a MASSIVE hole.

  • @Coleburg I see Sarah as a catch 22. In the beginning, yes, she was absolutely sympathetic. She was naive and shoved forward as a doll by her selfish elder sister and her husband, humiliated from a rejection proposal from a king, and then pressured into marriage again, and the marriage was rushed. Therefore, she had no time and knowledge of choosing her husband carefully or as freely as she could have.

  • It just astounds me that people find Sarah sympathetic.

  • she'd better shoot herself. that's the safest and soundest way. I hope men bred babies but not women. I do really hope so being a feminist myself.
