Transferred from VHS - almost impossible to find nowadays :( - though i believe it far superior to Disney's Redub.

All rights to Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki.

  • Just Encoding the Blu-Ray version...

  • wow! ive been lookin for this for about 12 years now! it was only shown on TV here twice, once on Christmas Day in 1988 and again shortly after, and the only copy I had was on Betamax (which rotted). I got the subtitled Jap version and the Disney redub, but this is the one I remember from back then - especially the name (The Flying Island) and the scene where Muska shouts 'ROOTS!'

  • @Debbiebabe69 i was the same :) just thought id best upload it before my VHS breaks. "aaah these Roots!" Consider your search complete :) hopefully this will stay online forever now so everyone else who remembers it can find it :)

  • I grew up with this version and its extremely hard to find. The only copy I have is recorded from the TV back in the 80's. far superior to the american wreck that they released after Spirited Away. Thanks uplaoder x

  • @gemgemgemgemgemify Finally; someone who agrees :)

  • @vegetarobertson thanks for uploading!!! will you upload the rest?

  • @tyefr78 its a long process but im getting there :) - great to see another fan

  • can some one send me a download link or something i want this film sooo bad but only the original voices PLEASE

  • @Hirotoro4692 The problem with the older dub was that it was recorded at a very fast pace, and as such, nobody really had time to develop their characters, which is a shame, because many of them are good actors. Needless to say, hearing this older dub only made me like the Disney one more; that is to say, while not everyone is ideally cast, the VAs sound much more competent and better directed; this older dub doesn't really sound like a "superior" dub at all.

  • @Hirotoro4692 I actually did watch it in japanese :), loved it, only the last bit where sheeta talks about why laputa fell was lost in translation, but otherwise so much better. I've been watching all ghibli in japanese only now,

  • @sorcerer187 over-react.

  • @sorcerer187 you could argue that disney killed it, but Miyazaka enjoys their dub, and to be fair you could just watch it in JPN with subtitles if you want the purest, original experience.

  • Can't say I like this dub. The American one seems to have so much more... spirit. In this dub it sounds like half the time the actors were just... not bothering to give it their best/taking it seriously at all. Though I must add the workmen at 7:40 did a fairly good voice job.

  • Haha. At 5:42 an advert popped up that read "SHOW OFF" in capital letters. Watch 5:42 and you will see the irony involved in such a coincidence.
