*Brazil is known as a "country of immigrants", where the population consists of numbers of ethnic groups. Brazil is also the home of the largest population of African black population other than Africa. African slaves were traded into Brazil during the colonial period under Portugal, and were sent to work mainly on sugar cane plantations fron the 16th to the 19th century. In 1888, the foreign slave trade was abolished. Since then, it has been prospected that the percentage of African blacks and mixed white and black will represent the majority of the population of Brazil by this year. In 1976, the population wa 49.7% white (including Portuguese, Geman, Italian,Spanish, Polish) , 49.5 black and mixed white and black, and other (including Japanese, Arab, Amerinidian). According to the population statistics of Brazil's government statistical bureau (IBGE), it can be assumed that the percentage of African blacks and mixed white and blacks will go over 50%.
