The title of this video is very misleading. Please change it to something else, maybe "John Frusciante on guitar solos" or something. But definitely not this. John is one of the guitarists that put the more feeling into what he does. And that includes his brilliant, non-satrianistical solos.

what he said needs a little more explanation but i think i understand what he meant. it's true that there are tons of shitty guitarists that just show off their skills and shit. i think he just meant about those thinking of the fact that he's doing solo project now and putting solos a lot in his songs.

Incredible contrast to later years when he really embraced guitar solos, although John himself has mentioned that he's always evolving, so it's no real surprise..

@krazykalash Now that my friend is something that you and I can both agree on
-
@MartyFriedmanRulez66 I totally agree that "to each his own", and I'm not even saying that John is better than Satriani (although he is in my opinion more versatile, complete and emotional). But remember, not all songs have feeling and soul, todays pop songs that are written by some guy, arranged by another one, produced by some one else then wrapped up by some other dude and finally played/sung by yet another person are completely souless and that's why I hate most of them

@krazykalash I hate people that use the words soul and feeling, every musical piece has soul and feeling regardless of the note content, the mini-solo in Can't Stop has perhaps just as much soul and feeling as For Love Of God, but in John's opinion less is more. My point being "to each his own" not that I'm a lover of shredding but I do love a solo to reflect the feelings of the song and the musician Can't Stop does that fine, but so do "Show off" solos

@MartyFriedmanRulez66 Im just saying that John's work involves more soul and feeling, he can turn simple notes and chords and turn it into something beautiful without needing to show off the full extent of his technical skills, although he clearly has it. Anyway, my original comment simply stated that John was referring to those solos, not ALL the solos... Like the mini solo in Can't Stop fits in way better than any shredding full of screechs would or even other complex shit just to fill in

@krazykalash don't

@krazykalash If every musician in the world had the same mindset as Fruciante the world would lose all it's character and become a ery dull place, and before you accuse me of picking on Frusciante please note that this is the same for all musicians. The music is an extension of ones persona and own individual feelings, regardless of lyrical content what the person was feeling at the time is shown through the music, different people convey their emotions different ways some solo some
-
@krazykalash I still disagree with you, I believe that guitarists should show off but don't let it consume the music. If Satriani is infact showing off well he's worked very hard to get to the leel of virtuoso so he in fact has earned the right to show off, but that doesn't mean it consumes sometimes he will show off and sometimes it's PART of the music and PART of his style, every guitarist has one that's what seperates Satch from Frusciante from Friedman, from Jones, from Skolnick
I think the solos he's talking about are those "Satriani" solos, as in "Oh shit, take a look at this shit, one handed fuck yeah, oh now take a look at my speed, YEAAAAH". I don't like those either

@cdenver What John is referring to here is players who force their bands to revolve around them (i.e. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, Buckethead,etc.) yeah they can play but they just disregard the dynamics of playing in a band so they can be the stars, that's why their record sales are shit because no one likes the frontman to be a guitarist who doesn't sing, John is putting lead players down, he's just saying that people who play nothing but lead can be boring
