I saw an account in a biography of Cermak years ago - that the Mayor decided to spring a surprise attack (actually an assassination attempt) on Nitti in his office while he was doing some paperwork. The killers were to be some police officers, but they botched the attack. Later they personally apologized to Nitti while he was in the hospital (he'd been badly shot). He accepted their apologies, but began plans on gettling Cermak. I once knew a Chicagoan who said the mob killed him).

There have been two film treatments of the events leading to the assassination in Miami in February 1933. One was a two part UNTOUCHABLES episode shown as a movie called THE GUNS OF ZANGARA with actor Robert Middleton as Cermak. The other was a television film regarding the life and career of Frank Nitti. In the second film the possibility of Cermak being the target (not FDR) was more clearly shown. Cermak, an opponent of the Capone mob (which Nitti ran) may have tried to kill Nitti.
