Skulls and Bones Under Paris

Below Paris there is a network of 300 kilometres of tunnels and caves. From 1785 many of the city's cemeteries were emptied and the remains of the dead placed in these large catacombs under the city. They currently hold at least six million skulls and bones. We visit a section of the catacombs in the district of Montparnasse and visit the residents who lie there.

Hi William: I thought I would ask you this because quite frankly, I don't know who else might know - and the subject of your video reminded me: years ago someone told me that certain sections of the catacombs were restricted to visitors because the bones of plague victims were stored there. Do you know if there is any truth to that or was I just having my leg pulled? Always fascinating, thanks again! -Rob

Thanks for the question. Parts of it are restricted but I have not heard that the reason was due to plague victims. I would have thought there would no longer be a risk of contamination. Good question though and I wonder if anyone can give us a better answer :)
