Update December 2010

http://www.waratahpark.org.au/

Skippy Park is saved from the developers, almost like a episode of Skippy in a real life time warp.

Press Release!!
Waratah Park at Duffy's Forest is a local treasure. As an iconic Sydney landmark, it once attracted thousands of visitors wanting see the home of Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, the wildlife displays, gardens and surrounding bushlands.
At this point, the park gates are closed to the public and the future of the site is uncertain.
The not-for-profit Waratah Park Nature Reserve Foundation (WPNRF) comprises volunteers committed to saving Waratah Park. The group is lobbying The Hon. Tony Kelly, Minister for Planning, Infrastructure and Lands, to ensure the site remains a nature park. Rich in cultural and historical significance and abundant in Australian flora and fauna, it is far too precious to our community to lose to developers.
The foundation's vision is for the park to become a botanical landmark with extensive gardens, education facilities, an animal rehabilitation and wildlife care centre, picnic areas, walking trails and a Skippy Museum.
We are offering the chance to become an official 'Friend of Waratah Park' by making a donation or becoming a member or a corporate Sponsor. Friends, members & sponsors will enjoy a number of tangible benefits and a stream of positive local exposure. It is an exciting time to get involved.
At this stage all donations are not tax deductible, but you can help in other ways.
Every cent raised will go towards protecting Waratah Park so that future generations can be educated and inspired by its natural beauty.
For more information please visit www.waratahpark.org.au, or contact WPNRF President Penny Edmonds on 0424 851 854 or info@waratahpark.org.au . Thank you for your consideration.

Waratah Park Nature Reserve Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of the Iconic home of Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, and the location of the hit 1960's TV series. Located at Duffy's Forest in Sydney, this beautiful 13 hectare property is under constant threat of development. Our group is dedicated to making sure that this does not happen. We do not want to see another piece of Australian history lost to development. As one supporter has aptly said "Knocking down Waratah Park would be like knocking down the Opera House".

The documentary about Skippy is now finished and called.
Skippy: Australia's First Superstar.

  • i went to Waratah Park with my school in 1981...back then it was opened to the public...and i loved it...i would love to go again...i hope with all my heart that this wonderful place can be restored to its original 1960s spleandour and returned to us again :-)

  • @AllAboutLOVEatYuToob i remember going there twice as a kid, and it may have been in the 70's. I remember a train and seeing the actual Ranger HQ and helicopter was something special.

    I don't really remember seeing Skippy..lol

In a way it's amazing this building sits there ignored for so many years, hopefully good things will start to happen there, and thats well overdue

  • Thank you to all who have signed the petition. Stage one has been won.

There will be no sale or development on Waratah Park By Prudentia. !!

  • @QueenBeatlesWings Wow, that's a relief to know, what is the status of the park now?

  • @leokimvideo In 2003, Waratah Park was taken over by Earth Sanctuaries Limited who restore native wildlife habitats. Its future was bright as the first native earth sanctuary in Sydney that focused on the promotion and protection of Australian native flora and fauna. Sadly the parent company of Waratah Park failed, so the Govt transfered Waratah Park to a property development group. the park was closed all animals removed in August '09. Nothing has been decided yet, but it wont be deeloped

  • @QueenBeatlesWings thanks for the update, i can see via nearmap ( updated mapping web utility) the development next door to Skippy park seems to have frozen in time. I can't see any development there since I was there 2 years ago. The latest aerial map I see is Sept 2011

I also still see the large trees hard up against the rear of the Rangers HQ, and that to me is something which needs to be addressed.

  • I'm very sorry to hear of the death of John McCallum, the creator of this wonderful TV series, who passed away this morning (Wed. 3 Feb. 2010) in a Sydney nursing home age 91. He brought much joy to all the children whose life was brightened by the series which was yet another iconic Australian TV production. My condolences to all his family and friends.

  • I agree. SSkippy was shown in Canada and wish the DVD was rewlwased in Canada. I lovbed the show.

  • I remember watching "Skippy" after school when I was around 8 or 9. The program was shown on a local T.V. station here in New York City. About ten years ago I was working in the Austrailian Consulates Office in Manhattan and began singing the theme song to the program. Needless to say I was surrounded by almost the entire office staff. They applauded when I was done. I then broke into "Tie Me Kangaroo Down" and the whole place went wild. Think the Consulate was out of town that day.

  • Skippy's on the toilet paper Bro.

  • they should remake skippy for todays children its a lot better than some of the crap they are passing of as childrens programs today.

  • skippy the bush kangaro was the most fav program of my youth days and still to this day i have a betamax video recording from 1967 of the program but wish i had a betamax to play it on still i know even if all else fails fingers crossed that will never happen i will always have this to remind me of a program that brought joy and fullfillment to me (priceless)

  • I'm glad it is now Saved, it can be a great attraction. Thank you.

  • @leokimvideo
