THE Victorian Government has responded to commuter frustration over Melbourne's bursting at the seams public transport system by dumping the metropolitan train and tram operators.

Connex and Yarra Trams will not have their contracts renewed at the end of year when the Government instead will sign with two overseas-based companies as it tries to quell the transport headache before next year's election.

But critics say a changing of the guard will not resolve the problems, particularly on the rail network, which has been dogged by cancellations, delays and overcrowding.

Hong Kong-based operator MTR Corporation will take over Melbourne's metropolitan trains in December, when Connex's contract expires.

Yarra Trams will be replaced by French-based company Keolis.

Both companies headed bids with local partners.

The eight-year contracts, worth billions of dollars, will be finalised in August, with the option of being extended to 15 years, subject to performance.

Victorian Premier John Brumby promised significant changes, with the winning bidders guaranteeing safer, cleaner and more reliable transport, with better customer service.

  • The MTR have a massive job on their hands with Melbourne's prehistoric system. I'm looking forward to seeing how it progresses.

  • TableT993 Can i just point out, in terms of Australia, melbourne has australias most advanced and integrated network, yes brisbane had similar smart cards earlier, yet melbourne has had integrated ticketing for decades, where as sydney, a single ticket is required for trains, tram, bus, ferry, monorail, and it doesnt work on zones. Melbourne people are whingers, they complain about how much their transport sucks, when its one of the best in the world when it comes to trams, and inner transport

  • MTR has taken over the Subway in Sweden, Connex sucked. They´ve actually switched the doors on many of the trains, they now opens and closes faster and harder (you can hear a difference). Maybe to stop people from holding up the doors?

  • The Octopus card system in Hong Kong was launched in 1997. And now it is available to use in all public transportation, supermarkets, convenience stores, some restaurants etc.
