Understanding the science of rivers will help reduce expensive conflicts between communities and our rivers. This video is about Vermont rivers and watersheds but the conflict between communities and rivers is universal. Directed, filmed, edited by James Valastro. Vermont Rivers Program

@calamagrostis88 Kudos Kudos!!!!! I know you wrote this two years ago, but I have to congratulate you on this comment :) People just seem to be incapable of learning that water does what it wants and we can only control it for so long. If Katrina didn't teach us anything, what will?

Oh wow! Lots of great info and it totally makes sense! Thank you for this video. I struggle to convince people that moving rivers is harmful. You gave a lot of good points that I can now argue with.

The problem is that someone drew a line on a map that is supposed to stay the same for all eternity and which has no relationship with the realities of hydrology. When it comes to land that is near watercourses and sea coasts we need to rethink property rights. Landowners need to be compensated and structures and roads should be removed to allow the system to function normally again.

Excellent comment. So here we are today, our communities have encroached on the floodplains, but rivers meander and change. Vermont is now taking a River Corridor approach to conflicts and future planning. Lot's happening in this small state.
