It is January 1954. The Korean War is over. Captured UN soldiers held in POW camps are free to return home. Those who refuse repatriation to their homeland are transferred to a neutral zone and given 90 days to reconsider their decision. Among them are 22 American soldiers who decide defiantly to stay in China. Back in the United States, McCarthyism is at its height. Many Americans believe these young men have been brainwashed by Chinese communists through a new form of thought control. But what really happened? Featuring never-before-seen footage from the Chinese camps as well as interviews with former POWs and their families, They Chose China tells the fascinating stories of these forgotten American dissidents. With the Cold War fading into memory, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Shuibo Wang (Sunrise Over Tiananmen Square) aims his camera on this astonishing story. In They Chose China, we meet and begin to understand a group of courageous men who fought for and then cut ties with the USA.
@smgjohn actually there was a slaughter there as my wife is Chinese and her parents were in bejing when it happened, in china it's something alot of Chinese arn't proud of.

@MK7896 The top dogs will always be criticized, Britain was once the top dog of the world, and as you may noticed they received plenty of criticism as an Empire.
The US and China are the world's leading superpowers of today, and it is no shock to me that they receive criticism.
When Rome started growing up as an Empire, a world superpower they too were criticized by all their neighbors. I guess when a nation grows to powerful jealousy will always erupt among other nations.

@MK7896 There never was a slaughter in Tianamen Square. This has been proved with hard proof evidence. Stop making lies, and grow up. US Government is pure evil, and American POW's treated badly? In what case? WWI? WW2? Vietnam war?
Surely American forces weren't treated bad by the Germans, American soldiers where treated bad by the Japanese but who weren't?
And in Vietnam they also where but why? Because America killed millions in both Vietnam and Japan.

It saddens me that my own country has to be looked in this way, but no matter how i wish it i can't change history. I can't change the fact that my own countrymen slaughtered thousands of students in Tianamen square. I can't change the fact that American POWs were being treated badly after the war. I don't think the US is bad, I think the UN and NATO are just being run by a bunch of corrupted dicks! So why is the rest of the world blaming the top dog for it's own problems I just don't get it!

@SMGJohn It wasn't a fake, but it was with the soviet union, not Russia. Russia is on our side now, so if the "perfect society" in china wants to do something, they wont really have anybody backing them up.

For peace? The side you're on is the side that started the war.
Personally one cannot blame the US government at the time to say you guys were brainwashed.
