It is not recommended to eat the entire petal. The idea is to use your teeth to scrape of the artichoke "meat" off each petal. When you do this with each petal...and work your way down to the fuzzy center- you scrape the fuzzy center (the "choke") off with a spoon to expose the best part of the artichoke: The heart- which is fully edible. Ha! Believe it or not I had this for the first time ever this last weekend. It was surprisingly good, very buttery tasting, but you should mention to the newbies about the spikes at the end of some of the leaves! While having my 3rd leave I didn't know about them and it got me good on the thumb. It drew blood.
