hey doug, the us was the ONLY country that voted NO to using professional players in the olympics. I don't know why, but I do know that interesting fact.
I never understood why USSR inbounded the ball TWICE under their basket. After Doug's FTs, the USSR coach called a TO, explaining why USSR inbounded (clock showed 1 second.) They put 3 seconds on the clock, and after the TO, USSR threw the ball in, and they missed their shot as the buzzer sounded (thus the USA celebration.) My comments/questions: 1- Is it true that USSR had zero timeouts left, so they couldn't call one? 2- Why were they given the ball AGAIN? 3- USSR stepped on the line
yeah they werent supposed t oge tthe ball back so many times. It is some really idiotic ref. I would like to beat up that ref. Us. deserves the medal so much. God**** ref. F****** ref!
OK, a reply- I don't have a 1972 IBO rule book, but I can answer a few things
1. They had a TO, but in international play, a TO could only be called at a dead ball time. Because everyone spoke different languages and ONLY the head coach could call a TO, he was given a button that was connected to the scorers table that would signal a TO. The CCCP coach claimed it wasn't working and banged on the table having the table manually sounding the horn when Doug Collins recieved the ball for ... cont
the 2nd FT. Now, watch the video. The administering ref, The new Trail, waved continue play. The new lead, the ref closest to the table, actually stopped the play, probably becase of pressure from Dr. Jones, head of FIBA, who was sitting right, directly there. He probably felt pressured to see what the trouble was, rather than having a burnt out light bulb cost his team a shot at a gold medal. The ref committed an illegal act, but you can see him looking towards the table before his whistle
Answer to NUmber 2. The russians were incorrectly administered the 2nd chance, but not based on the rule book. They treated the whistle as an inadvertant whistle, and allowed cccp to reinbound the ball. The whistle though, was in front of the russian bench and 1 second should have been put on the clock. Instead, they illegally went by the horn when the ball was in Doug Collin's hand and put the ball on the endline with 3 seconds. If they went by this, they should have reshot the FT at 3 sec.
Number 3--- I don't have a 1972 IBO or FIBA rule book, but I know in American basketball, the lines are considered out of bounds. If someone touches the line with their feet, they are out of bounds. For a thrower to be considered inbounds, and to violate, he has to step OVER the line or actually break the plane of the line. For there to be a violation, the thrower would have had to step over the line, to inbounds territory because the lines and the disposer are already our of bounds.
