The Rizzutos - Top Montreal Mob Clan Under Siege

As a member of the inner circle of the Rizzuto organized crime family leadership, Renda would have been considered untouchable.

But the 70-year-old's apparent abduction on Thursday appears to be another sign that the group once led by his charismatic brother-in-law, Vito Rizzuto, 64, no longer commands the respect it once did.

Renda's disappearance comes less than five months after his nephew and godson, Nicolo (Nick) Rizzuto Jr., was murdered in Notre Dame de Grâce. It also follows Renda's February release from a penitentiary after reaching the statutory release date on a two-year prison term he received in Project Colisée, the police investigation that appears to have significantly weakened the organization.

The dozens of arrests made in Colisée were carried out in November 2006, but the years of investigation that led to the roundup revealed an organization that wielded considerable influence in Montreal's underworld and beyond.

"Ten years ago, the Rizzuto clan was in a position of power. It was in control of Montreal, but also Toronto and other areas (in Canada)," said Pierre de Champlain, a former analyst with the RCMP who is now retired.

"It would have been like declaring war to have done this. But today, what happened is not as surprising. It remains to be seen, but it seems to be a message to the Rizzuto clan, and the message is: 'The game is over.' But it all depends on who did this and why."
