In the audio commentary of the movie, Leigh Whannell (Adam) says that they wanted to show Amanda killing Adam as a mercy killing, and they didnt talk about any romantic story between Adam and Amanda as well, the death of Adam was suppose to show Amanda's flaws and how even after passing jigsaws test she still has anger problems and feels guilty about life, but i really hope Adam is alive :P

her dream was a reminder that adam is still out there and suffering.. and she " helps him " and as you see she leaves and does the deed and jigsaw sees her leave.
