The Meke is similar, in concept, to the Hawaiian Hula in that it conveys history and cultural stories through song and movements. Unlike Hula, the female version of the Fijian dance is often performed by seated dancers. The male version is almost always performed standing as it demonstrates warrior-like motions and stories.

This was taken at a functioning Fijian village/cultural center along the Navua River.

  • if only u had the full clip....this is an awesome meke...

  • @lewanavanua - Sorry for not having the full clip. I was just using a point-and-shoot camera not a video camera. Therefore, I was limited to just making clips.

  • @tbird209 lol thats cool nonetheless....a quick question: were you part of a tour group whne u visited this village and if so, what is the name of that tour company?

  • @lewanavanua - We were not part of a tour group. We found a brochure for the Village visit at our hotel and decided to try it.

  • @tbird209 which hotel did u stay at? sorry for the millions of questions just interested thats all...cheers

  • @lewanavanua - We stayed at the "Wellesley Resort Fiji". It was one of the nicest experiences I've ever had! The staff are genuinely friendly and the accomodations are great! It's not the liveliest place though so we would go down the beach to the "Crusoe's Retreat Fiji Islands" to party.

  • Regardless what anyone thinks or replies to this video. It is Totoka Vaka Oti (Absolutely Fantastic!) This is how the Meke was traditionally performed.

It makes me proud as a Fijian to see it performed so beautifully.

These Fijian Ladies have the Grace and Elegance that brought this meke to life.

    Vinaka Vaka Levu Na Upload.

  • Haule e rairai vina haraga na ledru vamalolo o kuru na vibulou o kwe. Now living in another world, watching this meke perform reminds of who I am and where I come from. Fijian I am proud to call myself. Thanks for the upload.

Keep up the good work, ladies. Qi mase ga ho !!! Hakwa Nadro.

    Arigatou Gozaimasu.
