wringing the Hoover way...

I've noticed a few wringer videos on here, so I thought I'd film my newly adjusted Hoover washing machine. This version with the (belt driven) power wringer was never sold in the USA.

You shock me! Mine is a very late model (1976), but the first Hoover power wringers date from 1953, the only real differences being the controls and cabinet shape.

I remember my Mother used them in the late 60s. She was at first delighted when she got her first automatic in 1970.

Her delight turned into chagrin when she realized the automatic didn't seem to get the clothes as clean. She grumbled about this for quite some time until she learned a work-around.

The agitator spins around in a clockwise direction, approximately 400rpm, causing a very vigorous wash action. Hoover used this agitator in their single and twin tub washing machines. This created water currents in 7 different directions, driving the water through the clothes, which only needed a wash time of 4 minutes, compared to the central paddle type agitator that needed 15 minutes. However, this vigorous action tended to tangle the clothes together.
