true, but at a concert performance of the Rite one year later, "unprecendented exaltation" and a "fever of adoration" swept over the crowd. The initial response was rioting and such, but it changed over time. Alex Ross's "The Rest is Noise" is a really good book on Stravinsky and other modernist composers.

this only caused a rio coz the audience wasn't use to seeing such display of "dancing." the music in itself, stravinsky defines 20th century orchestral music! he is and forever will be my favourite composer! absolute legend!

WOW! The sacrificial woman's expression was PERFECT! And I think that it was pure genius that Nijinsky made her "dance to death" truly a great piece. I'm sooo glad you posted this piece man.

I think she needs a nice foot massage after she's done. Seriously, Nijinsky's choreography has the choosen one's feet stomping in the ground and jumps landing hard, something you don't normally see. I bet her body aches after this performance. This was the original choreography. No wonder a riot broke out in the audience during the premier. This single piece of music and dancing was like the first world war close to the same time; a clean break from what preceeded before.

I recently purchased the 2008 DVD of the Mariinsky Ballet production celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Ballet Russe. Beautiful sound, but the performance of the sacrificial virgin by the Joffre Ballet is still far superior. This lady has some acting ability, while the Mariinsky ballerina is stilted and seemingly unemotional (looked at the bows at the end of the performance.) Too much of the Soviet era still ingrained, alas. The Mariinsky orchestra, however, is superior.
