Aranui High School pupil Rawiri Maniapoto won the best actor award at the New Zealand Theatre Federation's South Island festival in Dunedin last weekend.

The school's adaptation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream won best overall production and an award for lighting and sound.

In the Aranui adaptation, the character Bottom is a colonial sailor who meets a variety of Maori fairies. Rawiri portrays Oberon. This show is the first time Rawiri has acted.

Maniapoto and his seven fellow cast triumphed over some of the South Island's best amateur actors. They will travel to Palmerston North for the national finals.
