Debbie Jorde, author of, "Eight Fingers and Eight Toes: Accepting Life's Challenges" has spoken to over 2000 first year medical students in Dr Lynn Jorde's human genetics course. She and her children, Heather and Logan Madsen, who are 2 of only 30 people worldwide affected by Miller syndrome, contribute an inspiring human side to the students medical education. Debbie shares her personal story about her reactions when her first baby is born with visible complications, and after being given a risk of 0, her second baby is also born with the same problems. Making a positive difference in people's lives brings meaning to Debbie and her children's challenges. Debbie Jorde's book, "Eight Fingers and Eight Toes" tells their story, and shows her overcoming challenges and obstacles. Debbie spoke to the deans of the American Association of Medical Colleges at their national meeting in April 2010. She is scheduled to give a capstone presentation to first year medical students at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York in February This is a short video clip taken from Debbie's talk to the medical students at the University of Utah.
