  • PART 4 I agree that a single payer system would be more of a solution than simply adding a public option, This has been very successful in many other countries. I urge you to watch a Frontline program call "Sick Around the World." It's about 50 minutes and well worth the time... This format wont allow me to add a link, so Go to: pbs. org then, after the / add: wgbh/pages/frontline/sickaroundtheworld/

  • PART 3 Another benefit of this protest is publicity. Many Americans who havent yet experienced a serious illness dont yet get the human cost of the existing for profit system. This protest attracted me to shoot and edit a video and now it has attracted you and I to have this much needed discussion. The need for change is great and immediate. I believe everything we do can help a little.

  • PART 2 That said, this non human corporation does have humans working within it. This protest in front of Wellpoint is just one of many outpourings of frustration. I suppose the aim was to attempt to tap into the humanity of some of the people who make decisions for Wellpoint and perhaps convince them to put profits second for a change. A long shot certainly, but I wouldnt fault the protestors for trying.

  • PART 1 It seems we agree more than we disagree. Although it would be nice if companies like Wellpoint exercised some compassion over profits, that clearly doesnt seem to be the case. As I said in my original response, I guess you can't blame them - that's business - it's all about maximizing profit. We cant expect the health insurance corporations to suddenly act like compassionate humans, because they are not. They are corporate entities with one and only one goal profit maximization.

  • In Denmark healthcare is completely free of charge for every1

  • There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious—makes you so sick at heart—that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all. -Mario Savio

  • Glad to see all of you have enough money in the bank to come out and protest. Stop and ask yourself how them not having the money to pay the health insurance is the insurance company's problem? Who cares how much they make, are you saying you wouldn't want that money to pay off your house, car, what ever else the bank owns? Marching rudely into a place of business for a citizens arrest. How is it broken? The hospitals make the bill. Medicine is not cheap. Why not trade welfare for health care?

  • Good job ppl... Keep up the good work

  • Part 3: The other option is a one-payer government run system similar to Canada and other countries. Although this may be more of a solution than just adding a plan - it is important that we take into consideration our gov's track record of running public programs. This could leave us with less choice and less access to the med care we need.

Bottom line is that we have to direct our efforts towards changes that make sense and hope that folks are realistic about the outcomes.

  • Part 2: In regard to the reform options on the table and mentioned in your response, the first is the public option, which is simply another plan to be offered along side the existing plans out there. Agreed, another choice is good - but it isn't free. It might have a lower premium but it wont lower the cost of healthcare. One of the reoccuring themes in the video is that healthcare is too expensive - I fail to see how a public option will change that.
