The Painted Flag, an iconic 1981 canvas by Toronto artist Charles Pachter sold for $37,760 (all prices include buyer's premium) during Joyner Canadian Fine Art's Spring Auction of Important Canadian Art, a new auction record for a work by the artist.

The over six-by-four foot canvas was painted by Pachter during his initial work with the subject of the Canadian flag and was included in the landmark inaugural exhibition, The Painted Flag, which opened in Toronto in November of 1981. The offering of the canvas marks the largest signature piece by Pachter to ever be offered at public auction, its result almost tripling the previous high point for a work by the artist. Works from The Painted Flag series hang in prominent private collections across the country as well as such important public spaces as: Parliament Hill in Ottawa (where 5 of the canvases hang outside the Prime Minister's office); the Prime Minister's residence at 24 Sussex Drive in Ottawa; the Canadian Embassy in Berlin; as well as the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
