  • Wow, that road system thing is something that I think about all the time. Our system really needs change but people don't realize it because they can't imagine anything different. You're right though, that trying to solve this problem would entangle you in all sorts of government ridiculousness.

How do you like that NYC traffic? It's goddamn ridiculous, and it's about 100 times worse in Philly. People accept it as some kind of metaphysically given fact, but the actual cause is that the....

  • How do I like the traffic? - I left the Hyandai (or however you spell it) in Utah.

See what I'm forced into by costly, inefficient government monopolies on transportation!

  • ....government has a monopoly on all forms of transportation (roads, trains, buses, subways) and provides completely inadequate service. With a privatized system, we'd actually have big metropolises where you didn't have to plan an extra 30 minutes into your commute due to traffic.

As far as the speed issue goes, one idea that I've sort of toyed with is some kind of hybrid car-train system. IOW, when you get on the highway your car plugs into a track somehow. This could make you able to go....

Do you know how many people died in airplane crashes in the USA in 2002? ZERO. In any given year over the past 20 years, it is safer at any given time of day to be aboard a commercial jetliner than on the ground due to the danger of lighting striking you on the ground (a dozen or more deaths a year).

So, it is SAFER to be in an JETPLANE than on the ground. That is the reality today.

    Then there's Nascar...

You can't reply on people to make such technology safe. And when dealing with such high speeds, I'd want 100% assurance of safety; since that could not be offered, I would avoid using the service myself, though I wouldn't try to stop other people.

  • "aware of how many dangerous drivers there are..."

Sorry I didn't mention it, but the technology already exists to allow cars on a freeway or high-speed, NON-INTERACTIVE roadway, to operate without a driver. This system might be useful ONLY on high speed roads, but what the hell!

  • It's not that I can't think of how to make the roads safer, Mr Cropper, it's that I'm very much aware of how many dangerous drivers there are; short of pointing a gun to their heads and forcing them to rehabilitate, you can't really change these people, can you? Driving will always be dangerous - and so your proposition is unnacceptable.

  • MrCropper, you expression in the thumbnail picture for this video is very amusing. You look like you're in a print advertisement for a horror movie, and you're posing as a victim before he's about to be eaten by the monster. ;-)
