Andy Griffith Passed away today. This was one of his greatest roles long before the world knew Sheriff Andy.

Truly his best acting performance. Meaner than mean, and more psycho than Norman Bates.

Are you aware of 'Murder in Coweta County?' with Johnny Cash? It was my first exposure of Andy apart from Mayberry, and my knowledge of 'Face in the Crown.'

Relevant indeed. I have no difficulty imagining the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. and his inner-circle cronies nurse the same superiority complex and deep contempt for us peasants as the fictional Lonesome Rhodes.

I remember being blown away by his performance here. I blame Andy for letting himself get typecast into a comfortable niche playing variations on his "Sheriff Andy" character. He never did anything remotely like "Lonesome Rhodes" again.

The thing that drove us was our belief in the theme, our anticipation of the power TV would have in the political life of the nation.'Listen to what the candidate says, don't be taken in by his charm or trust-inspiriing personality.Don't buy the advertisement;buy what's in the package.'I've always regretted the preaching of the 'liberal' writer at the end;certainly everything he says is obivious in what went before. But I had no better idea, and at least we had Walter Matthau sum it up.(E. Kazan)

Elia Kazan knew how to take what an actor had and exaggerate it and concentrate it to create character.

Lee J. Cobb was not a really good actor, but Kazan knew his personality fit for Death of A Salesman.

Here, he took Griffith's personality and coaxed and cajoled him into a really memorable performance.

There are not very many directors today who really understand acting and know hot to get more form an actor than what he can give like Kazan could. He was one of the best at that.
