This group performed in the Abbot's kitchen of Glastonbury abbey and I mistook them for the choir "The Ammonites", who performed an hour earlier. This group were unscheduled and didn't ask for permission to perform in the Abbey. Naughty, but it sounds quite heavenly anyway!

They have a very pleasant sound, accompanied by a Didgeridoo, an Australian aborigine woodwind instrument.

The lady who leads asks for the 'OM' chant, often used in the Buddhist faith. These people maybe Buddhists. I don't think that they are British. They may all be Australians. No information other than accents. I have entitled this video to include the Word "Buddhist" anyway.

The "OM" (Aum) maybe a part of the mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum", which calls for compassion. Reciting this brings relaxation and a clean mind.

It's difficult to hear what is being said and sung due to the acoustics in this 14th century building once used to cook the Abbot's meals, and those of his guests which included Kings & Queens of England.

My mobile 'phone rang during this, much to my consternation and embarrassment, but I drew back whilst it ran and I switched it off of course, but not before you can hear "Love is blue" as its ringtone, funny enough it kinda fits the chanting rather, and friends who have seen this vid before its YouTube upload have remarked so.

**Many thanks for all the very interesting comments; keep them up, because it is enlightening me too..

  • Have we ever heard Buddhist monks doing Gregorian chant???

  • @catholicpriest1

I was in the church once, and if this is Gregorian Chant, I have no idea what it was that I listened to at that time!

  • Sure is!

  • One must find commonalities in different faiths, for they have so much in common it's hard to understand all the conflicts!

How can anything sacred or spiritual be construed as pathetic? I doubt many Christians or Buddhists would agree with that and I think you're missing the point of Buddhism!!

    Peace unto you.

  • t's my understanding that Om or Aum is a Hindu chant, have not seen it used in Buddhism myself, but you may be correct. Of coruse Hinduism branched out from Buddhism anyway.

    Nice vid, thank you!

  • I would rather hear Gregorian chant in a western monastery. I wonder if these young people have ever heard of Gregorian chant.

  • erm..they look like New Agers performing...

  • It's how I describe myself, it's not a "religion". It is the truth as revealed to me, that all great faiths contain exactly the same ultimate truth, and therefore we should be sharing the joy instead of being in dispute! Be blessed.

  • Amen to that Yeshe! Bottom line, the core teaching of every great faith boils down to ONE SIMPLE TRUTH: Cause& Effect, reap what you sow, do as you would have done, and if you take and eye, vengeance will be served up by the forces that be. It's not our place to seek vengeance or be "the only true faith", it's our duty as people of faith to share commonalities, not fight over perceived differences! Be at peace and abundantly blessed!

  • Great stuff. you're a Universalist, which is what I like term myself too.

Darn, wish I had chosen a different ring tone though :(

  • It sounds beautiful, but I agree, I think it's not about the chanting or the message behind that but it's why?

I mean, we have interfaith choir concerts here in where I live but you don't see choirs from church and temples going to each others' establishment of worship and start singing.

And another question, what is a Hebrew Christian Buddhist?

  • What they are doing is spreading love and a wish for peace and happiness in all living beings hearts all around the world.

How incredible weird it is that there is still talks/discussions/wars between different religions and faiths...

gsx1138: How on earth is it "insulting" for christians if they are buddhists??

Open your heart and mind and let us go beyond opinions and Egos.

    Love and peace to you.
