Imam Malik said, "it is obligatory on the people to redeem (buy the freedom of) prisoners with their money. There is no contention on this point".
Ibn Taymiyya said in The Fatwas
(28/635), "freeing prisoners is one of the greatest obligations, and spending money in this matter is one of the greatest sacrifices".
