an LED mod on my PS2, next to the ir reciever.
here are the instructions:

BEFORE YOU FOLLOW THIS YOU MUST ACKNOWLEDGE THAT I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED TO YOU OR YOUR

EQUIPMENT BY FOLLOWING THIS GUIDE.

what you need:
thin wire (use kynar wire if possible or strip the cable from a parallel port/lpt port cable: has plenty wire in there :P)
solder
soldering iron
resistor(s)
LED(s)
wire stripper
hot glue gun
hot glue stick(s)
heatshrink/wrapshrink tubing or insulation tape
PS2
philips screwdriver
flat screwdriver

before you start, please note that the LED will stay on CONTINUOUSLY when the power is plugged in. the PS2 may be off, but the LED will still be on with the power plugged in. you can add a switch if you like but i haven't added one.

1. open the ps2 up with the philips screwdriver and locate the power input on the back. the yellow input: inner pic = positive, outer = negative

2. use any LED upto 8.5v rated, but if you use an LED rated at less than 8.5v you will need a resistor. use this link to work it out:
http://ledcalc.com/ most LED's are between 1.5v and 3.6v. i used a 3.6v LED with a 100ohm resistor. works nicely.

3. cut a length of wire enough to be wired around and about the heatsink in the ps2, and reach wherever you want the LED to go. solder them both onto the correct polarities (negative and positive) on the LED.

4. place the LED where you want it, (in my case, just under the motherboard behind the grille), and use some hot glue if possible to hold it in place. blu-tack should work too.

5. route the wire around the bends etc. but make sure it does not come in the path of a screw for the lid. and it must not cross the heatsink. make sure the wire can reach the power at the back.

6. leave about an inch or 2 at the end where you are going to solder the wires onto the power. make sure you know which polarity is which. strip the wires about a centimetre and solder the resistor onto the positive or negative (doesnt matter) and then solder it onto the correct polarity of the power. (you might not need a resistor if your LED is 8.5v rated). using a multimeter you can find out which polarity is which on the power output. i done this mod a long time ago and if i remember correct, the inner pin in POSITIVE which means the outer of it is negative.

7. make sure the soldered connections are secure.

8. power up the unit but be quick with disconnectin the power from the mains or flicking the switch JUST INCASE SOMETHING HAS GONE WRONG!

9. if all works fine, it will power up.

thank you
hope this helps

  • @sk8boiie559 no i didnt use usb power, i connected it to the main ps2 dc input and used a resistor!

  • if you'd tap 5v from the usb port, the leds will go out when you switch off your ps2, right?

  • @jasper487 clever one! i never thought that before. i done this a really long time ago, much better at these things now altho im considering modding my 360 now that the warranty's gone! not bothered if i fry it altho i probly wont.

  • Wat u on about mate? Its called a MOD. I opened the ps2 up n done it.

  • That is so coooool!!!!!

  • @sk8boiie559 wtf are you talking about? did you learn how to spell from a crackhead?

  • A black PS2 would go best with red LED lights, a white goes best with blue :)

  • cool! i wish my PS2 Slim was white.

  • i have a back ps2 slim

  • the easiest way to do this is to reroute the usb ports to your led's instead of taping into the main power.thiers 4 prongs on each one,the ones ar the outside are the ones that work, the 2 in the middle are ground.soder your led's to the two prongs on the end.when you turn on your ps2 they turn off.they shut off when you shut of your ps2

  • hey dude i did it i looked at ur pics where u talk about it nd got it working bt cople days l8ter waz gua take off the led nd my ps2 just went all fast then bernd out nd dint tern on am not saying its ur falt it didnt work eny way just wanted 2 thank u i the vid helped i did it b cuz i cut a part of my ps2 nt put clear caseing nd had 2 leds in it it looked sick well yeah l8ts
