Sorry I missed the beginning of this story, but I had heard it before. Paul's squad had walked up on a young German soldier (around 17 years old) who presumably had been shot by American soldiers moving ahead of Paul's squad. He describes how he bandaged the kid up and tried to keep his spirits alive. In return, the young German soldier wanted to give Paul a silver cigarette case and lighter, but Paul refused to take it.
