Anderson, Jana, Indiana Harbor, Paul R. Tregurtha, Callie M., Courtney Burton, Canadian Enterprise, Roger Blough, Algowood, American Century, American Victory, Mesabi Miner, and American Fortitude (ex. Burton).

I believe it was one long and two short which is the Captain's slalute. I sailed for five summers and every ship we passed that was from our fleet the Captain's would salute as we passed. One long and two short. It is not a call to raise the bridge.

@flipper577 Yes, almost all other boats on the Lakes use the one long and two short or the more formal three long and two short salutes. I'm not sure why the Indiana Harbor uses that unique salute, but I've heard her use it (1L 1S 1L 1S) on a number of occasions.

@20xwolves Yes, you are correct. The 1 long 1 short 1 long 1 short is, from what I understand, an older salute that ships used to use to signal the Aerial Lift Bridge to rise. It is less commonly used today (at least for the Aerial Lift Bridge), with almost all vessels using the formal or abbreviated master's salute.

Thanks weatheburn for you reply. It remains a mystery and probably it is a signal to raise the bridge or for the bridge master to dispatch to the bridge. There a similar whistles when approach locks (2 long 2 short for American locks to dispatch and 3 long and 2 short for Canadian Lock Master's to dispatch to the bridge. And yes 3 long and 2 short is the formal Master's Salute. I lived right near the Welland Canal and my father was it's Superintendent.
