Dr Robert Nelson of the University of Maryland argues that environmentalism is a modern form of religion. From Freedomain Radio, the largest and most popular philosophy show on the web... http://www.freedomainradio.com
Interesting topic but Dr. Nelson needs to get to the point more quickly

1. rational conclusion to recognition of finite resources - limit resource use/ use resources with care. Nothing religious there.
2. Golden age for environmentalists? No. Not amongst any that I know. See Lovelock: human agents didn't deliberately take the path of major negative impact; they reacted. We now have the tools to avoid (perhaps. It's a moot point). Not by the imposition of a dictated set of rules, but only by eliciting a different attitude.
Pity you oversimplify.

What was at isue heere is that most of the environementalists are socialist totalitarians. I really don't understand what you mean when you say:
"Honestly that polarized metaphor indicates much more religious thinking than environmentalism."
I'm not religious, and I do care about the environment, so what are you trying to say? My first comment was pointing out that you were whining about something which just isn't true, most environmentalists, academic or otherwise advocate totalitarian controls
