On 30 June 2009 a start was made to clean up Long Island, West Cork, Ireland. Like most small inhabited islands Long Island (Inisfada in Irish) suffers from the lack of some essential public services, especially those relating to waste disposal. The result is an accumulation of junk, litter, scrap vehicles and dead (GRP) boats which, apart from being extremely unsightly, are all environmentally degrading.
Increasing environmental awareness together with the realization that we are living in the 21st century has motivated some individuals to take action. Through extended dialogue (and a few strong words) a surprising degree of cooperation and active support has been achieved between many "concerned" individuals in the public service, on neighbouring islands and those who value Long Island for the beautiful place that it is. Witness the action in this video clip.
We intend to follow through with expanding the cleanup and establishing a workable maintenance programme.
Again, many thanks to "the boys". No recession here lads!
