TMOF™, a small mosquito-derived peptide expressed within Pichia pastoris yeast cells forms the basis for the end use product with immediate applications as a mosquito larvicide. TMOF™ larvicide is non-toxic to nontargets, biodegradable, no insect resistance problems, environment friendly with EPA registration.
While TMOF_Yeast is highly effective in its own right, it is mutually synergistic with Bti, displaying up to 100-fold increase in efficacy. TMOF™, combined with Bti and methoprene, has the potential to affect all stages of mosquito larvae, yielding a complete solution for larval control. This will allow the MOUSTICIDE™ biolarvicide products easy market entry, initially supplementing and eventually supplanting the existing products.
MOUSTICIDE™ BioLarvicide is a new innovative tool for the natural, safe, effective control of mosquito larvae. MOUSTICIDE™ BioLarvicide utilizes the novel TMOF™ (Trypsin Modulating Oostatic Factor) peptide technology expressed in a nonpathogenic yeast (Pichia pastoris). TMOF™ is the natural mosquito peptide hormone that stops protein digestion in mosquito larvae, causing metabolic starvation and larval death. When combined with another mosquito larvicide (Bti, Bacillus thuringiensis israeliensis) larval death is synergistically enhanced (the activity of Bti is dramatically reduced in the presence of alternative food sources). Because of its mode of action, development of resistance to TMOF™ is not expected while minimizing nontarget toxicity.
The MOUSTICIDE™ BioLarvicide comes in Wettable Powder and Rice Husk (granule) formulations.
The Wettable Formulation is suitable for use with conventional ground or aerial application equipment including hand-pump, airblast and mist blower.
The Rice Husk formulation in granule form is innovative in its use of rice husk as the carrier and floating device for the formulation. The use of rice husk offers both economical and functional advantage:
• Rice husk is available cheaply as an unwanted by-product from local rice mills. Its use as a carrier contributes to a cost competitive finished product
• Rice husk acts as a floating device for the active ingredients allowing them to be slowly released near water surface over time. This enhances the product's efficacy against mosquito larvae
• Rice husk is biodegradable and environment friendly
Both the MOUSTICIDE™ BioLarvicide Wettable Powder and Rice Husk products have been independently tested by the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in field trials and have shown long-lasting larvicidal effect of more than 4 weeks. This long-lasting effect would reduce the required frequency of application to once a month to achieve effective mosquito control program and providing significant savings from reduction in product application costs.
The products are currently used nationwide in Malaysia to control Dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases.
